Garden Opening

OPENING OF OUR NEW INDIGENOUS GARDEN – Monday 25th May

On Monday we had the opening of our beautiful Indigenous Garden. The event started with a welcome to country combined with a smoking ceremony by Wurunjderi woman Aunty Zeta Thomson.

The garden is a partnership between Eastwood and the Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place. One highlight of the garden is a series of steel panels featuring artwork be renowned artist, Aunty Daphne Milward, showing the Bunjil creation story of the Wurundjeri people who have lived in this area for tens of thousands of years. Aunty Daphne explained the story depicted in the steel panels that she had created.

The garden was designed by Eastwood parent Alex White, a gifted landscape garden designer and all came together with the help of some very hard working dedicated parents.
The idea of the garden is to give Eastwood students, and the wider local community, a place to reflect on the long history of this beautiful corner of the world, and the many people who have made it their home.

Eastwood Principal Rukshana Verzijl spoke on behalf of the school and Les Chessells, manager, Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place spoke on behalf of MMIGP.

The Garden was then officially opened by Councillor Samantha Marks of Maroondah City Council who provided funding for this wonderful project.
